The Duomo (Cathedral) of San Marino is relatively new, completed in 1838, and is, of course, dedicated to the saint who founded the country—Saint Marinus. It took 13 years to build and was designed by the architect Antonio Serra.
The façade is Neoclassical, built in the style of a Greek temple, and the interior is divided into three longitudinal halls. At the center stands a statue of the saint, and beneath the apse are some of the relics of Saint Marinus.
In the adjacent church—San Pietro Church—which can be visited by asking the Duomo’s caretaker to unlock it, it’s worth seeing the altar carved into the rock. According to tradition, Saints Marinus and Leo are buried beneath that sacred stone.
