One of the symbols of the city. Built from bricks, it stands 117 meters tall. It is considered the fifth tallest lighthouse in the world and the second tallest in the “traditional” style. Its light can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Italy. In the past, a fire was lit at the top of the lighthouse to guide sailors into the harbor. Today, it is illuminated on national and city holidays. The lighthouse can be reached only on foot via the “Lanterna Promenade”, an 800-meter path that partly runs along the 17th-century city walls. Only 172 steps inside are open to the public.
