The city was built within a fortress by Prince Vespasiano Gonzaga according to the ideal city plan. The name of the city comes from the word SABBIA (sand), referring to the land on which it was built, on the eastern bank of the Po River. In this ideal city, laid out in a grid pattern, you can visit the central area between the Ducal Palace, the local theater, and the synagogue. You can also walk along the protective walls shaped like a star and enter the palace at the entrance, Palazzo del Giardino, which features a covered corridor displaying stunning paintings.
