The fortress is considered the symbol of the city. It is located at an altitude of 790 meters above sea level, surrounded by a pine forest, with an access path leading to it. From there, a stunning view of the entire surroundings can be seen.

It was built in 1375 and restored in 1458 after an earthquake that occurred two years earlier. The initiator of the restoration was Count Nicola II di Monforte, from whom the fortress takes its name.

Opposite the fortress is a 14th-century monastery called Santa Maria del Monte. The interior of the fortress is not impressive, and the main reason to climb up there is the magical view!
