Basilica of San Michele Maggiore

tel: +39-0382 26063

Address: Piazza S. Michele, 27100 Pavia PV

This church features a distinctive Romanesque facade. Its condition is not ideal due to years of decay—primarily because it is built from sandstone—but the windows, the triangular shape of the upper part, and the carved figures and animals on the lower section alongside the doors set it apart from most other churches.

Several historical coronations took place here. The most famous is that of Frederick Barbarossa as Emperor on June 18, 1155. The exact spot where he knelt to receive the crown can still be seen: five marble circles mark the location. With this act, he became King of Italy.
