The small town is located 530 meters above sea level on Mount Tauro, at the foot of which sits Taormina. Settlement on the mountain began around the remains of a Norman fortress from the 10th century, continued as a defensive point, and over the years became a picturesque town offering breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.
The entrance to the town is marked by an ancient arch atop a staircase — a medieval relic — which now overlooks Piazza S. Antonino. In the square is also the historic Caffè S. Giorgio, founded by monks in the 17th century. The bar houses a collection of signatures from famous people who have visited Castelmola since 1907, and serves the town’s most famous drink: almond wine. Don Vincenzo Blandano, the historic owner of the café, used to offer it to guests arriving in town. The drink, made from almonds and orange extract, is his unique invention.
