Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore

tel: +39-02 8940 4129

Address: Corso di Porta Ticinese, 35, 20123 Milano

A church with a structure unlike most others, featuring remnants from the Roman era. Its round design deviates from the classical basilica form, making it especially intriguing and unique.

In front of the church stands a row of Roman columns taken from a local temple, earning it the nickname “Alle Colonne”—“At the Columns.” The phrase “Let’s meet at the columns” (Colonne) is one of the most well-known expressions in Milan, referring to gathering in the evening with friends at the foot of the 16 towering columns that face the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore along Corso di Porta Ticinese.

The mosaics in the Chapel of Saint Aquilino are among the most beautiful in northern Italy, and the many Roman-era remains—such as the statue of Constantine or the stones repurposed from the local amphitheater—give the site a distinct and timeless atmosphere.
