The most important church and the center of the Christian world. Its current building dates from the 17th century and is rich with paintings, sculptures, and distinctive Christian symbols. Highlights include the Chair of St. Peter, Bernini’s baldachin (canopy), Michelangelo’s dome, Arnolfo di Cambio’s statue of St. Peter, and Michelangelo’s Pietà sculpture. These and many other works tell the story of this special place.
From the outside, you can see the church’s façade with the balcony from which the pope delivers speeches, and the square surrounded by columns, designed by Bernini as two arms embracing the faithful.
