Naples Cathedral – Santa Maria Assunta

tel: +39-081449097

Address: Via Duomo, 147, 80138

Naples’ main church tells the story of the city’s patron saint — San Gennaro. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find a statue of the saint, a crypt containing his relics, a mosaic depicting him, and a chapel dedicated to him. Outside the church stands a column, Giulia, also dedicated to him, in gratitude for protecting the city from an earthquake in 1631.

The story of the saint, along with the annual ceremony held on September 19th, provides a fascinating backdrop for visiting the cathedral.

It’s also worth visiting the ancient church adjacent to the cathedral and the baptistery from the 6th century AD, which is believed to be the oldest in the Western world.
