The Dolomites with Kids – Over 30 Attractions at the Height of Italy’s Beauty

In the Dolomites
with children

We’ve created a guide to help you plan your ideal trip to the Italian Dolomites.

We’re here to clarify things for you.

In this article, you’ll discover the layout of the Dolomites, explore available activities and points of interest in each area, and determine precisely where you want to go. Each location includes links to Google Maps along with insider tips to ensure you have a fantastic vacation.

Shall we begin?

The Dolomites are situated in northeastern Italy, bordering Austria and Switzerland, and are part of the Alpine mountain range. This region is filled with opportunities for hiking, trekking, and skiing, with rivers and quaint villages spread throughout. The Dolomites are particularly great for family vacations, as many activities in the area cater to children, such as rafting and mountain sledding.

As you head north, you’ll notice a blend of Italian and Austrian cultures, with the German language becoming increasingly prevalent.

When is it recommended to visit the Dolomites?

Summer season: May to October, with the recommended months being June to mid-September when all the lifts and tourist areas are open. The busiest and hottest months are July and August, but it is still much more pleasant than the lake region.
Winter season (ski season): December to April is a peak time for winter tourism, with lifts opening for skiers and the area coming alive again due to winter tourism and of course Christmas.

A less recommended time to travel is the transitional period from mid-October to mid/end of November because this is an unstable time regarding the weather. Additionally, many restaurants and tourist sites are closed, and of course, 99% of the lifts are closed (shut down for maintenance and preparation for the winter season).

The nearest airports to the Dolomites: Venice and Verona

The Adige River
This river runs through the Dolomite Mountains. It springs near the Resia Pass in southern Tyrol, Italy, and flows into the Adriatic Sea near the city of Chioggia.
The Adige River, which is about 409 kilometers long, is the second-longest river in Italy, after the Po River. The Adige crosses the cities of Trento, Verona, and L’Adige, and touches the settlements of Merano, Bolzano, and Roberto.
The river’s name in Italian: Adige, in German: Etsch, in Ladin: Adesc, in Trentino: Àdes, in Latin: Athesis.

What brings us
to an important point: Sometimes when you enter a place name in Waze, it may change the name to another name (simply in a different language).

And why is that?

Before World War I, the area belonged to the Austrian Tyrol region, and under an agreement signed at the end of the war (in 1919), the territory south of the Tyrol watershed was transferred to Italy. The residents with German identity were deprived of cultural autonomy, and therefore, many residents still speak German in this area. Both Italian and German are official languages in the region. Thus, every place has two names – an Italian name and a German name. In some areas where a minority of Ladin speakers reside, there is a third name in the Ladin language, which can be confusing.

Here are specially presented for you, over 30 attractions suitable for a trip with kids in the stunning beauty of Italy – the Dolomites!

From the village, follow trail number 24 for about an hour and a half along 3.5 km towards the viewpoint of the earth pyramids of Renon, with clear signage that you won’t miss. Those who get tired can take a bus to the train station for the return trip. It’s recommended to pay attention to the train and cable car schedules for the return. 26) The Three Teeth of Lavaredo

In German, “Drei Zinnen”, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo are located about 22 km northeast of Cortina d’Ampezzo. One of the most breathtaking places in the Dolomites, the 3 peaks, the highest of which rises to a height of 2999 meters.
A circular trail (8.8 km) for experienced hikers around the peaks is mostly not strenuous, but there are narrow areas and ascents (consider the thin air for those with asthma or breathing issues in general), it is not necessary to do the whole trail; you can do just part of it.
The parking fee (30 euros per day) is paid at a booth about 5 km before reaching the point (trailhead) that is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Early in the morning, there may be fog that makes visibility difficult, which clears around 11 AM. We recommend arriving around 9-10 AM.
This is not an easy trail and is mainly directed at families with teenage children 🙂

27) Mount Marmolada

The Queen of the Dolomites, the last glacier, rises to a height of 3,342 meters. There is an operational cable car from the end of June to mid-September or from the end of November to the beginning of April.
To reach Marmolada, you can go through the Fadía Pass (about 5.5 km from the SP641 road) and to the highest viewpoint (highly recommended) of Marmolada (3,265 meters), you can take an enclosed cable car that climbs through 3 stations (30 euros).
You start at Malga Ciapela at an altitude of 1,450 meters, passing through the first station at 2,350 meters (there’s no reason to get off there). From there, continue by cable car to the viewpoint. Even in summer, it is advisable to wear a light jacket, gloves, and a beanie, as it can be chilly at the summit.
You won’t be able to stand before this breathtaking view – I promise!

28) Serrai di Sottoguda Canyon

There are 2 options to hike in the canyon. Firstly, you need to walk southeast on foot until the entrance of the Malga Ciapela nature reserve:

  1. From the Marmolada parking lot, which is about 350 meters from the cable car parking, there are signs. From here, it is a downhill path. The return from the end of the canyon to Malga Ciapela can be done by tourist train. You need to purchase a return ticket for the train at the entrance to the canyon.
  2. (Less recommended) After descending from Marmolada back to Malga Ciapela, drive to the village of Sottoguda. About 3 km (turn left towards the village), follow the signs to the parking lot, and walk towards the Sottoguda canyon. The hike from Sottoguda to Malga Ciapela is uphill. This is a beautiful trail of about 2.1 km on the road. The end of the trail is in Malga Ciapela, so you will need to return (can be done by tourist train) back to Sottoguda to retrieve your car from the parking lot.
It is recommended to take the tourist train from Sottoguda to Malga Ciapela (as this is an uphill route) and to walk back to Sottoguda downhill. Entrance to the canyon – 3 euros.

The cable car is a closed cabin for 4 people, where you ascend and enjoy breathtaking views overlooking the Gardena Valley – in our opinion, the most beautiful valley in the Dolomites! It is filled with lush green meadows.
There are many hiking trails at the summit, including bike trails that you can take with you on the cable car. It is recommended to explore the picturesque town of Ortisei on your return and enjoy the woodcarving artistry that characterizes it (part of the Ladin culture). 37) Val Genova Falls

A family walking trail along the path next to the Sarca River leads to the discovery of the hidden waterfalls in Val Genova. The route in the Adamello Brenta Geopark runs alongside the river, through coniferous forests and quaint wooden bridges. After reaching the Nardis waterfalls, which you can view from the road, leave your vehicle in front of the “Cascate Nardis” hut. The trail begins on the right side of the hut, at the end of the bridge, next to the Sarca River.

The gentle ups and downs make it suitable for everyone. The trail becomes shortest from Ponte Rosso, just past the Fontana Bona hut.
In this case, after parking in the large lot near the bridge, cross the bridge and take route number 214, which leads you to the roaring waterfalls in about 15-20 minutes. Additionally, the lawns of the Malga Genova area provide a perfect spot for a picnic.
These waterfalls are undoubtedly stunning and impressive, and along with a walk in nature, the trail is ideal for families!
