Torre Civica and Palazzo della Podestà

tel: +39-035247116

Address: Piazza Vecchia, 8A, 24129 Bergamo

The 12th-century building features a smooth wall that was once adorned with frescoes depicting philosophers, painted by the artist Bramante. Over the years, the wall was covered with plaster, and some of the frescoes were moved to the Palazzo della Regione in the section dedicated to the painter.

The Torre Civica, the city tower, is also called Campanone. At 10:00 PM, its bell rings 100 times! This continues a 360-year-old tradition, signaling to residents the closing of the city’s four ancient gates and marking celebrations or somber events for city leaders (weddings, funerals, arrivals in the city). Originally built as a residential tower nearly 38 meters high, an extension was added over the years, bringing its current height to 53 meters. Visitors can reach the top by elevator or climb 230 steps to enjoy a stunning view of the city.
