North of the Gargano region lies the archipelago known as the “Isole Tremiti.” In the past, these islands served as detention camps for opponents of the Fascist regime, but today the five islands are a popular tourist destination during the summer months. Only two of them are inhabited, with the main hub of activity on the island of San Domino, where you’ll find hotels, restaurants, and a sandy beach—the only one in the archipelago. On the island of San Nicola, you can see the stunning mosaic floor inside the cathedral. Once you’ve settled in, try to hear from the locals the mythological story of Diomedes.
