On the hills behind the town of Monfalcone lies a themed park dedicated to World War I, covering about 4 square kilometers. Opened to the public in 2005, it offers visitors three different zones that were battle sites between June 1915 and May 1917.
Unlike most open-air museums, which usually follow a single, linear path, the Great War Park features three separate trails that can be explored either individually or all together. Each area is clearly marked with signs and describes the network of defensive trenches and outposts once used by the Austrian army, later captured by the Italians.
