Teatro Massimo Bellini

tel: +39-095 730 6111

Address: Via Giuseppe Perrotta, 12, 95131

The city of Catania knew how to honor one of its own—native son and composer Vincenzo Bellini—by building an opera house in his name. The theater was constructed in 1890, and musical symbols adorn its façade. On the impressive Baroque front, there is a statue with angel wings symbolizing the triumph of music and song. Among the sculpted heads is that of Bellini himself.

The interior ceiling of the hall is decorated with mosaic paintings depicting scenes from Bellini’s operas, along with a large statue of his figure. A guided tour is available, allowing visitors to imagine the grand opening event, which was attended by dignitaries who listened to Bellini’s famous opera Norma. After the performance, the people of Catania entered the theater to honor the memory of their beloved fellow citizen, who tragically died in 1835 at the age of only 34, shortly after composing the opera.
