Inside the narrow and crowded market filled with locals and tourists stands a distinctive building known for its shape and decorations. This is the Sedile Dominova, where nobles used to gather for city assemblies.
This building replaced an earlier one in the city, but a violent feud between families led to the construction of the Sedila (meaning “seat”) Dominova (meaning “new building” in Latin). The paintings clearly visible from outside depict the symbols of the city of Sorrento, noble families, and the Amalfi Coast landscape.
The building itself is constructed in the Gothic style, with arches and geometric decorations, some of which are three-dimensional. If you see elderly people sitting on the building’s porch around tables playing cards, it’s because the place has become a club for retirees and community support.
