Roman Amphitheater

tel: +39-366 256 2826

Address: Via Sant'Ignazio da Laconi, 09123

The Roman amphitheater can be seen in the city center. Part of it was carved into the rock, which is still visible today. The other half, which has not survived, was built from white limestone. The amphitheater reached a height of 20 meters and could hold 10,000 spectators—about one-third of the population of the Roman city of Caralis (today’s Cagliari).

With the fall of Rome, the site was turned into a quarry by the new rulers who used the stone to build fortifications. In the 19th century, when the site was uncovered, wooden and iron platforms were installed in the central arena for performances. However, in the 2000s, these platforms were removed to restore the amphitheater’s original appearance as much as possible.
