The Rocca di Angera fortress stands on the eastern side at the top of a hill, overlooking the town of Angera on the lake’s shore. It was probably built on the site of an ancient Roman fortress and changed hands many times until it was granted to the Borromeo family as a hereditary property. It remains in the family’s possession to this day.
Inside the fortress, visitors can find various frescoes. In the Hall of Justice (14th century), the battle between Ottone Visconti and Napoleone della Torre is depicted. Other rooms feature geometric decorations and vaulted spaces, all excellently preserved.
Additionally, it’s worth visiting the Museum of Dolls and Toys, which displays over a thousand dolls created from the 18th century to today, dressed and equipped with luxurious accessories. The museum is notable for its high quality, diverse exhibits, and rare collection, and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
