Another equally interesting district is Pianoscarano, which in the past was separated from the San Pellegrino district by a river and a bridge. Over time, however, the area was leveled, and today passage between the districts is easier.
In the center of the district, which includes several public gardens, stands a fountain famous for a serious conflict between the residents and Pope Urban V. One of the local cardinal’s aides allowed his dog to relieve itself in the fountain, from which the residents drank. Outraged by the contamination of the district’s only clean water source, the residents attacked the cardinal’s house. In response, the pope ordered the destruction of several nearby houses, including the fountain itself.
The fountain that stands today, the Fontana del Piano, serves as a memorial to that event.
