Porta Napoli

Address: Corso Ovidio, 6

The southern gate to the city, built in 1338. The gate’s name comes from its location at the edge of the city (which was expanding at the time, so it was called the “new gate” – Porta Nuova). It led toward the capital of the southern kingdom during the Middle Ages — the city of Naples. The gate has remained mostly in its original form, except for the battlements at the top, which were destroyed in the 1706 earthquake. The structure is two stories high — a gate on the lower level and a window on the upper level. On either side of the window are two openings bearing the heraldic emblem of the House of Anjou — fleur-de-lis symbols. Another heraldic symbol, now barely legible, is located above the pointed arch. Of the original seven city gates, only four have survived.
