Piazza Unità d’Italia

tel: +39-no

Address: Piazza Unità d'Italia, 34121 Trieste

Piazza Unità d’Italia forms the city center and has a wide, large rectangular shape. On its western side, it borders the Adriatic Sea coast, and on the other three sides, it is surrounded by neoclassical buildings, including the Town Hall (Palazzo del Municipio), the Lloyd Triestino Company Palace (Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino), and the Governor’s Palace (Palazzo del Governo). In the center of the square is a fountain built in 1750 called the Fountain of the Four Continents (Fontana dei Quattro Continenti), representing the four continents known at that time, and a column from 1728 topped with a statue of Charles VI. The name Unità d’Italia was only given to the square in 1955, after the end of the Free Territory of Trieste period. Before that, the square was called Piazza San Pietro or Piazza Grande. In 1918, its name was simply Piazza Unità. On November 3 of that year, the destroyer Audace docked in the city harbor, and four years later, the old pier was named after it, with the addition of a bronze wind rose.
