A square that joins the list of city symbols of Potenza. It is located near the main street, Via Pretoria. Most of the year, the square hosts cultural events such as concerts in the summer and Christmas markets in the winter. Construction of the square began in the early 1830s and it was inaugurated in 1844. In 1870, it received its current name, Mario Pagano, after a Lucanian patriot who was killed in the War of Independence of the Parthenopean Republic (a short-lived state in 1799). The square is home to public buildings such as the municipal theater, the offices of the newspaper Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, and local government offices.
