An elegant, pleasant square—one of the most beautiful in Italy. It offers a harmonious combination of the Cathedral (construction began in 1100), the Baptistery (construction began in 1196), and the Bishop’s Palace (construction began in 1045), presenting a magical appearance and a history spanning 1,000 years.
The cathedral’s façade, in the Lombard Romanesque style, is adorned with carvings, lion statues, and a gallery of slender columns. Next to it stands a 13th-century bell tower. The Baptistery has an octagonal shape (symbolizing the cycle of the week and its renewal on the eighth day) and is decorated with impressive animal reliefs known as Zoophori, carved into pink Verona marble.
Lastly, the Bishop’s Palace features a series of arches decorating its three floors. It still serves as the bishop’s residence and also houses the historic Diocesan Museum.
