Piazza della Libertà

tel: +39-no

Address: Piazza della Libertà, 1, 33100 Udine

The central square of the city and a good starting point for most of its interesting sites. The dominant architectural style in the square is Renaissance. A prime example is the Palazzo del Comune, the 15th-century town hall with its beautiful white loggia and colorful patterned floor, known as the Loggia del Lionello, named after the architect.

On the opposite side of the square, a path climbs upward and passes under the Arco Bollani, a gate designed in 1556 by the architect Andrea Palladio, leading to the fortress that once served as the residence of the Venetian governors.

Still opposite the town hall stands another loggia, the Porticato di San Giovanni, which today serves as a memorial to soldiers who fell in the Great War. Above it is a clock tower with two Moorish figures, locally known as Floreàn and Venturìn, who strike the bell on the hour.
