The center of city life during the Middle Ages, and today it’s recommended to visit in the evening when the streetlights turn on and blend beautifully with the backdrop of the surrounding buildings, or on Thursdays and Saturdays when the city market takes place. In the square stands the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, once the residence of the city’s governor and the seven lords, featuring a wide staircase leading to its entrance. Today, the palace serves as a conference center.
