A rectangular and impressive square. On one side stands the Church of San Domenico, with a wide and inviting staircase, and at its center, a large statue of Pope Clement VIII, in recognition of significant steps he took that revitalized the local economy in the year 1700 (hence the locals refer to the square as “Piazza del Papa” – the Pope’s Square). On the opposite side is the Town Hall, with its bell tower and clock. Noble residences surround the square. This piazza is considered the living room of Ancona, thanks to the bars and restaurants that keep it lively until the early hours of the morning, especially on weekends.
