Palazzo della Ragione, dating from 1208, and its name means “Hall of Justice,” contains impressive wall paintings. It is also called the “Salone” because of the magnificent hall located on the second floor, which for many years was the largest single indoor space in the world, measuring 80 meters in length and 27 meters in width. The walls of the “Salone” are all decorated with frescoes featuring religious symbols, animals, zodiac signs, and astrological motifs — all depicting the lives of the city’s inhabitants. In the early centuries, the place was also adorned with frescoes by Giotto, but these were destroyed in a fire during the 15th century. A black stone stands in the hall’s space on which bankrupts, debtors, and those who assaulted themselves three times before leaving the city were made to stand.
