One of the artistic and beautiful sites in Udine, the Oratorio della Purità is not a large place of worship, but its paintings are impressive, making it worth a visit. It became a place of worship only in 1757, when Cardinal Daniele Dolfin purchased the complex, which had previously been a theater, to prevent nearby entertainment venues from being too close to the church.
The paintings by the Tiepolo family, Giambattista and his son Domenico, faced various dangers over the years: Giambattista’s “The Ascension of the Father” survived the bombings of World War II, while Domenico’s works were damaged by water infiltration in the 1950s. They were only restored several years later.
