Municipal Art Gallery, Palazzo Vallemani

A short distance from the Basilica of Saint Francis stands a beautiful Baroque building, whose walls and ceilings were painted and decorated by 17th-century artists from Umbria and Tuscany. On the walls, one can find paintings from the Medieval and Renaissance periods that once adorned various palaces in the city.

The artworks were collected in 1859, during the Risorgimento (the struggle for Italian unification), when religious forces in the area were suppressed, and there was concern that the artworks might be lost.

One of the most famous pieces is the Maestà – Madonna holding the infant Jesus, attributed to the painter Giotto.
