Monastery of Santa Rosa and the Church of San Silvestro

tel: +39-0761342887

Address: Via Santa Rosa, 33, 01100

The church is named after Saint Rosa, beloved by the residents of the city and province. It was built in 1258 and houses the relics of the saint. It was originally decorated with frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, but these have disappeared; today, in the building restored in 1850, copies of the paintings are visible.

Every year on September 3rd, the city hosts the “Facchini di Santa Rosa”, dozens of young men and women who carry on their backs a 30-meter-high structure topped with a statue of the saint.

A 10-minute walk away is the Church of San Silvestro, dating back to the year 1000, which was the site of a political assassination and is mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy.
