Lighthouse of Victory

The impressive lighthouse of Trieste is first and foremost an excellent viewpoint over the city and the Adriatic Sea stretching from it. In addition, the lighthouse, built in 1923 during the Fascist period, also serves as a memorial to the sailors who served in the Italian Navy and fell in World War I, contributing to Italy’s victory over the Austro-Hungarians.

The lighthouse is constructed from Istrian stone and also features the emblem of the torpedo boat Audace, which was the first to enter a liberated Trieste. Atop the column stands an allegorical figure of Victory (La Vittoria). The complex was engineered so that the strong regional winds are deflected rather than damaging the monument, allowing it to remain standing. It is the tallest lighthouse on the Adriatic coast.
