On the southern side of Piazza Duomo stands the city’s main cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Giustina.
It is built on the site of an ancient church and took its current form in the 12th century.
At first glance, the elegant façade and the bell tower, which rises to nearly 73 meters, stand out.
Near the top of the tower, there is a cage that was once used to display criminals before the eyes of the townspeople.
The interior of the church is impressive and decorated with frescoes visible on the apse ceiling (the ‘Garden of Eden’ by Guercino) and even on some of the main columns.
Inside the church, there is a fascinating museum displaying artworks and sculptures. Additionally, it is possible to climb, via the third floor, to the chapel and the bell tower.
