South of the city of Ancona rises Mount Conero. Its steep slopes descend all the way to the sea, forming one of only two sea-facing cliffs along the Adriatic coast. The Monte Conero National Park is a small yet stunningly beautiful park, featuring numerous hiking trails that wind through lush Mediterranean vegetation and past abandoned wartime outposts. At one point, visitors can enter the rock through an opening known as the “Devil’s Hole” (Buco del Diavolo), which leads to a network of ancient tunnels surrounded by legends that have developed over the centuries.
