The San Giovanni Evangelista complex includes a church, a monastery, and a unique historic pharmacy.
Inside the church is an amazing dome with a stunning frescoed ceiling depicting the open skies surrounded by angels and clouds, with the figure of Jesus at the center.
Next to the church are three cloisters that are part of the monastery. One contains frescoes from the 16th century, the second displays paintings by the artist Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, and the third features columns in the Greek style.
The highlight is the ancient pharmacy, La Spezieria, which opened in 1201 and served the Benedictine monks. Since 1959, it has operated as a museum where medicines, prescriptions, and documents that chronicle the preparation of medicines are displayed.
