Cathedral of Reggio Calabria – Basilica Cattedrale Metropolitana di Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo

tel: +39-0965 28685

Address: Via Tommaso Campanella, 46, 89127

The city’s main church, the Duomo, stands out with its bright white façade. It is the most important and largest church in the entire province of Reggio Calabria. Over the centuries, the cathedral has endured numerous fires, renovations, earthquakes, and restorations. Its current appearance is the result of reconstruction after the famous 1908 earthquake, and parts were built using fragments from an earlier Norman-period church (which itself had been built on the foundations of an even older Greek-community church in the city).

The cathedral is designed in a Neo-Romanesque style, with a nave measuring 94 meters in length. Notable features include a beautiful marble pulpit adorned at its base with a red stone serpent, an 18th-century wooden crucifix, and a bronze baptismal font. The side chapel is considered the most important sanctuary room in the city and is decorated in Baroque style. At the entrance, the Diocesan Museum, opened in 1957, displays stunning artifacts from the city’s episcopal history.
