A 13th-century fortress located at the tip of the Ortigia peninsula, dating back to the time of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. The name Maniace comes from a Byzantine commander and high-ranking prince from the 11th century, of whom Frederick II was a descendant. The fortress served for many years as a military base, so entry was forbidden, but since 2009 it has been open to the public and is recommended for its beautiful viewpoints overlooking the sea. It marks the southeastern tip of the city.
