Castello di Rocca Calascio

tel: +39-0862 930132

Address: 67020 Calascio, Province of L'Aquila

One of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Apennine Mountains. A medieval fortress near the town of Calascio, located on the highest ridge (1,464 m), offering a 360-degree panoramic view. Access is via a scenic path among the rocks.

The fortress was built in the year 1000 AD and served solely as a watchtower. Since the 1980s, it has become a popular filming location, with the most famous movie shot there being “The Name of the Rose” starring Sean Connery.

Although most of it was destroyed in the 1703 earthquake, its façade still stands impressively at the edge of the mountain.
