The “Grand Canal” (Canal Grande) is located in the heart of the Borgo Teresiano district, also known as the “New City.” The canal was constructed with an outlet to the sea to allow boats to reach the city center and unload their goods. Two bridges span the canal, and at its end stands the Church of San Antonio Nuovo.
The district itself was built in the 18th century on reclaimed land and is named after Empress Maria Theresa.
