A perfect site for a day trip combining nature, history, and tranquility.
The Chia del Fosso Castello Waterfalls Park is located within an enchanting forest, where you encounter large tree trunks—sometimes hollow—twisted branches, moss- and fern-covered rocks, and the background is filled with the chirping of birds. Flowers appear along the trail, making the walk truly magical. It’s a wonderful world… almost like a fairy tale!
At an unexpected moment along the trail, breathtaking waterfalls appear between dense vegetation and local tuff rocks (locally called “Piperno stone”), reflecting the volcanic character of the area. The site’s vast Etruscan history adds to the experience of hiking, nature, and relaxation.
Fun fact: at Cascate del Fosso Castello, the famous director Pier Paolo Pasolini filmed the scene of Jesus’ baptism in The Gospel According to Matthew, as if it were the Jordan River in Israel. In the background, there are medieval mill ruins, Etruscan culture tombs, and even a building with a tower that was the director’s last home before his death. Hiking options within the park:
One trail leads to the Chia Tower and Pasolini’s last residence.
Another trail leads to the waterfalls, fortress ruins, and several old mill stations.
