The local cathedral, Cattedrale di San Gerardo, is dedicated to Mary and also to the city’s patron saint, Saint Gerard, who was the city’s bishop around the year 1000 AD. It is located in the upper part of the city and built in the Romanesque style, featuring an arched staircase and an impressive bronze door that depicts the life of Jesus at its center. The interior of the church, built in the shape of a Latin cross, is striking. The decorated dome shows Jesus at the center of the gilded heavens. The church contains numerous private chapels; until 1566 there were 25, and in the 16th century, 7 more were added.
