Beneath a stunning mosaic of psychedelic swirls in blue and purple, visitors descend wide escalators about 40 meters underground to one of Naples’ deepest metro stations. This is Toledo Metro Station, opened in April 2012, and without a doubt the most beautiful among Naples’ “Art Stations” (Stazioni dell’Arte).
Each level of the station is designed in a different color, representing a theme connected to the city. The Art Stations project entrusted the vision of public transport spaces in the city to international artists and architects, aiming to bring art into residents’ everyday lives. Toledo’s striking underground station, the most prominent of them all, was designed by Spanish architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca and has even been recognized as the most beautiful transit station in Europe. The station is on Metro Line 1 and is named after the nearby Via Toledo.
