The city of Viterbo is still called the “City of the Popes” (Città dei Papi). The local ruler of Viterbo, Il Capitano del Popolo, expanded the palace to host the popes who settled in the city. Pope Alexander IV was the first pope to move his residence to the palace in 1257.

The palace itself is beautiful, and behind the seven arches of the loggia lies the Blessing Fountain. Inside the building is a historically important room: the Conclave Room (Conclava). This is where the modern concept of the papal election ceremony was born.

In 1268, a new pope could not be elected for 33 months, until the locals locked the cardinal electors “cum clave” (with a key) so they could not leave until a pope was chosen. Without a roof (a clever move by the local ruler) and surviving only on water and bread, the cardinals had to live like this for about three years until a new pope was elected.

Although the room is empty today, its history remains vivid.
