A military complex built in 1542 and expanded several times over the years, with major military importance in Italy. It overlooks the city and the port and was constructed after the city’s major defeat in 1528 at the hands of its sworn rival, Genoa. The Genoese Republic built the fortress to control the people of Savona and defend against surprise attacks. It remained in use until 1954, after which it underwent changes and today serves as a cultural event center and archaeological museum. On the lawn near the entrance, you can see a sculpture called “La Rosa del Deserto” (The Desert Rose) by Arnaldo Pomodoro.
