La Morra is a small town with a big reputation, both in Italy and internationally. It sits on a hill near the town of Alba and has fewer than 3,000 inhabitants. The surrounding vineyards grow grapes for the famous Barolo wine, and the area also cultivates hazelnut bushes, used to make Nutella chocolate.
Since 2014, the town has appeared on two important lists. The first is by the Italian Touring Club (Touring Club Italiano), which awarded it the orange flag as one of the most beautiful towns with a historic center. The second is by UNESCO, recognizing the scenic vineyards of the Piedmontese Roero and Monferrato regions surrounding it.
In the town, it’s worth visiting the square bell tower (Torre campanaria), which is 30 meters high, climbing a few steps to enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings, taking a photo next to the bronze statue “The Italian Winemaker” (1972) symbolizing the hard work of vineyard laborers, and visiting the scenic terrace (balconata del Belvedere).
Don’t miss a visit to the municipal winery, built inside the former Palazzo of the Marquises of Barolo, to taste local wines. Nearby, you can visit the Wine Museum, housed in the former San Martino Monastery, or explore a well-organized trail through the natural gems of the area.
