At the foot of the fortress, starting from Piazza della Libertà, runs a street called Via Mercatovecchio. The street follows the line of the walls that once surrounded the fortress, and in the Middle Ages, it hosted the city’s market. Today, it is lined with boutique shops and souvenir stores, yet it still preserves the beautiful façades of historic buildings, including a bank housed in the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, a 15th-century structure.
The street is pleasant for a stroll, a coffee break, and a glimpse into the city’s historic past.
