tel: +39-095 7102767

Address: Piazza Dante, 32

The Benedictine Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in the world and the second largest in Europe. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The monastery was founded in 1558 and today houses the Humanities Department of the University of Catania. It has a 500-year history (since the late 16th century), having served initially as a Benedictine monastery, later as a military complex, and even as a school for several years.

The site has undergone many changes throughout its history, primarily due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, which led to repeated renovations. The rooms, corridors, staircases, courtyards, and fountains offer a fascinating glimpse into artistic, cultural, and architectural history. Almost every corner is impressively decorated.

Visitors can explore the site on a guided tour or independently.
