Cattedrale di Sant’Agata

tel: +39-095 320044

Address: Piazza del Duomo, 95100

The charming and important cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha has been destroyed many times due to frequent earthquakes that struck the city, but it was always rebuilt. If you happen to visit here on February 5th, you can witness the great love the townspeople show for the saint during religious processions. The cathedral was originally built in 1070 on the ruins of Roman baths, but the current appearance is the result of a reconstruction in the 18th century by architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, who designed the façade, and architect Giuseppe Palazzotto, who designed the interior of the church. The statue of Saint Agatha can be seen from outside, and her relics are kept in a shrine inside the church itself. Inside, you can also find the tomb of the great composer Vincenzo Bellini, a native of the city.
