The name of the square reveals its role over hundreds of years: the square of herbs and the fruit and vegetable market. In the square stands the Palazzo della Regione, built along the square and serving as the seat of the city’s rulers. The building’s arches, the walls’ battlements, and the clock tower (Torre del Orologio, from the 15th century), together with the Palazzo della Podestà, create an urban complex of commerce and government, which today houses several cafés and hosts the weekly market stalls every Thursday. In the corner of the square is also the church of La Rotonda di San Lorenzo.
