Lecce Cathedral of the Most Holy Assumption of Mary

tel: +39-0832.308557

Address: Piazza Duomo - 73100

The cathedral was originally built in the 12th century but was restored during the Baroque period by the local architect Giuseppe Zimbalo, who designed many buildings in the city. He made sure to preserve the church’s Romanesque layout while decorating it and adding the new Baroque style of that era.

Adjacent to the cathedral is a 17th-century bell tower, built with five levels and adorned with a dome covered in maiolica tiles and a bronze statue of Saint Oronzo (Sant’Oronzo).

Inside the church, there are 13 prayer altars, including the main altar. Each is dedicated to a different figure and decorated with interesting paintings. The 12th-century crypt contains two Baroque-style chapels and a long corridor with 92 columns, each decorated with carvings of human figures.
