The Vatican Museums contain one of the largest collections in Italy of diverse artworks from various periods. They are housed in palaces built by the popes over the years, expanded and richly decorated. The entrance is from Viale Vaticano, and it is recommended to book tickets in advance; otherwise, the line is very long. The range of works spans from the Egyptian and Etruscan periods through copies of Roman and Greek sculptures (such as the Belvedere Torso and Laocoön and His Sons), paintings by great Renaissance artists (like Raphael’s Rooms), map rooms, tapestry rooms, and more. There are several possible walking routes, and it’s advisable to rent an audio guide at the entrance for explanations. The museum is fascinating, rich, and artistically tells the story of many important periods. The Sistine Chapel is located only at the very end of the museums.
