The small island located within the Tiber River as it flows through the city. Access to it is via two bridges, one of which—Ponte Fabricio, on the side of the Jewish Ghetto—is the oldest bridge in the city still in use. Today, there is a hospital on the island built on the ruins of the ancient temple to the god of medicine, Aesculapius, which once stood here long ago. In the summer, concerts and performances are held in the plaza at the center of the island under the open sky.
